Instructions

Growing Instructions:

Plant Hyacinth bulbs before the ground freezes. Pick a well-drained, rich, organic flower bed to plant into. Plant the pointed end of the bulb up,15-20 cm (6-8") deep and 7 cm (4") apart. Lightly cover with soil and water thoroughly. Hyacinth bulbs can cause skin irritation, it is highly recommended that you wear gloves when handling.

Toxic to dogs, cats and horses.

Forcing indoors:

  • Hyacinth bulbs require to be pre-chilled in the dark for 13 weeks in temperatures of 2-7 C (35 to 45 degrees F). If chilling in the fridge, keep away from all fruit as they give off a gas that will rot hyacinths.
  • Hyacinth bulbs can be forced in almost any type of medium (potting soil, gravel and water, or just water).
  • Use a 10-16 cm (4-6") deep container with a drainage hole. Place 5-7 cm (2-3") of potting mix in the bottom of the container. Position the bulbs 2.5 cm (1") apart on top of the mix (pointy end up). Cover the bulbs with potting mix until the tips of the bulbs are 2.5 cm (1") below the mix. Water thoroughly to settle the bulbs in place. Place container in your chilling location.
  • Keep the soil lightly moist during the chilling period.
  • By the end of the chilling period, the bulbs may have started to sprout.
  • Once the chilling period has been completed, move the container to a location that is slightly cool and away from direct sunlight to allow the bulbs to adjust to the change in temperature. Once the flower bulbs begin to show color, move the container to a sunny window.
  • Bulbs will typically bloom within 3 weeks after removing from the chilling location.

To enjoy their intoxicating scent, plant near doorways, decks and patios and along pathways.

Growing Suggestions:

Hyacinth will come back year after year with the right care. In the Spring after the hyacinth have finished blooming, remove the flower stalk to allow the plant to store energy for the next season. Let the leaves die back naturally. When the leaves are yellow you can remove them to make way for other plants in your garden.
