Instructions

Growing Instructions:

  • Gladiolus are shipped as corms (bulbs). If you are not able to plant the bulbs upon arrival, store in a cool, dry, dark location.
  • Plant Glads after the last Spring frost and soil has warmed to 13°C (55°F). Pick a well draining, rich, organic flower bed or planter to plant into. Avoid heavy, soggy soil. Loosen the soil to a depth of 30 cm (12") before planting. After loosening the soil, this is a good time to mix in 5-10 cm (2-4") of well-aged manure, or compost. Dig a hole 15-20 cm (6-8") deep and place the bulb in the hole, with the pointy end up. Space bulbs 15-20 cm (6-8") apart. Fill in around the bulb, firmly pressing down the soil so it is even with the surrounding ground, and water well. Make sure there are no air pockets in the soil. If planting in a container, ensure there are adequate drainage holes.
  • If plants are not receiving water from rain, provide your plants with 2.5 cm (1") of water per week.
  • Gladiolus can also be planted in rows for cut flowers. Dig a trench 15-20 cm (6-8") deep. Plant the bulbs with their pointed ends up about 15 cm (6") apart and cover back in with soil.

Planting Depth: 15-20 cm (6-8")

Plantling Spacing: 15 cm (6")

Suggestions

Growing Suggestions:

  • Place a 5-10 cm (2-4") layer of mulch around your glads to keep the soil moist and help prevent weeds.
  • Stagger plantings every 10 days in Spring for continuous color.
  • Early morning is the best time to cut flowers. Leave at least 3 or 4 leaves at the base of the plant.
  • Pinching wilted blooms will encourage the opening of the remaining buds on the stalk. To pinch glads, just remove faded glad blossoms with your fingertips or garden shears.
