Instructions Chevron Down Chevron Forward
    Growing Instructions:
    • Asparagus are shipped as dormant bare-root divisions and it is very important that they be planted promptly upon arrival.
    • It is a good idea to soak the root(s) an hour or so before planting. Soaking will hydrate the plants and reduces the stress associated with the drying of soil around the roots after planting.
    • Dig a trench 20-25 cm (8-10”) deep and 30 cm (12”) wide as soon as the ground is workable. Backfill the trench with topsoil to create a mound at the bottom of the hole.
    • Set each crown on top of the mound and drape the roots over the mound. The crown of the asparagus root should be at least 5-8 cm (2-3”) below the soil surface.
    • Finish covering the asparagus roots with soil and water thoroughly after planting.
    • Water needs: Generally plants require 2.5 cm (1") of water per week to be healthy. This can come from rain or self-watering. Deep and less frequent watering is best to promote long roots. Newly planted roots, may need a bit more in hot weather.

**Not ready to plant? If you are not able to plant the root(s) upon arrival, open the package and check if the peat moss, or other packing material is moist. If it is barely damp, or dry, add a little room temperature water and close the package and place in a cool (not freezing), dark location. If longer than a few days, remove the root(s) and plant in a container with moistened potting mix and place in a cool (not freezing), dark location. Storing the roots for an extended period of time will reduce their viability.

  • Planting Depth: 5-8 cm (2-3")
  • Plant Spacing: 30-60 cm (12-24")
  • Instructions for Nutrient Care: Feed plants SUPERthrive once per week. Mix 1.2 ml (1/4 tsp) per 4L (1 gallon) of water in a watering can and apply solution to the base of the plants.

Harvesting Information
It is important to let the plant grow out in the 1st year to help establish the plant for future growth. Do not cut or harvest any spears in the 1st year. In the 2nd year, pick a few spears when they are about 20 cm (8”) above the ground but be selective. In the 3rd year, pick spears when they are 20 cm (8”) high and the buds are tight.

Fall Maintenance
After harvest season has ended in late Spring/early Summer, allow the spears to develop naturally. The plants will grow 1 to 2 meters tall (3 to 6.5'), with light green feathery foliage. It is important to fertilize your plants and maintain water throughout the season. During fall your plants will turn yellow, which is the sign to trim them back, about 2.5 cm (1") from the ground. Make sure the area is weed free and ready for next Spring.
