- Preparation Ideas: Rinse and cut pods into 1 in. pieces. Blanche in pot of boiling water, drain and place in bowl. Toss beans with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
Instructions
Beans are a warm season crop and seeds should be sown directly into the garden when the soil is warm and all danger of frost is past. Optimum soil temperature (not air temperature) should be 15-29°C (59-84°F) for seeds to germinate. Planting at a lower temperature will delay germination. Space seeds and plant to the depth indicated below. Press seeds into the soil to ensure good contact and cover with 1.3 cm (1/2 in.) of soil. After planting, water the seeds with a gentle mist or shower. It is critical to keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy during germination. When your seedlings reach a height of a few centimetres (inches) and have developed 2 or 3 pairs of leaves, it is important to thin them out, according to the plant spacing indicated below. Do not allow the soil to become dry, as young plants have underdeveloped roots and can quickly dehydrate, particularly in windy conditions.

- Pole beans grow as climbing vines and require a trellis or fence for support. Support should be put in place when planting seeds.
- Bean seeds can be succession planted every 2 to 3 weeks until mid-July for a continuous supply of fresh beans.
- For best taste, harvest pods when they are the thickness of a pencil.
- Keep picking regularly to ensure continuous production.
- Too many beans maturing at one time? Try sowing 1/2 or 1/3 of a row one or two weeks apart to extend the harvesting of fresh flavorful beans.
- Avoid working among plants while the foliage is damp or wet as this can encourage and spread fungal and bacterial diseases such as powdery mildew, blight, rust, etc.
- When weeding, hoe gently because beans are shallow-rooted. Mulch plants only after thinning.
- Avoid fertilizing with nitrogen, which results in a surplus of foliage and low, delayed pod growth.

"I live in Regina, Saskatchewan and bought a packet of these seeds at my local Canadian Tire on a whim, not knowing anything about them. I wanted to try out a variety of pole beans this year, and Smeraldo is by far my favourite of the lot (except for Scarlet Runners, which I always grow). This bean proved to germinate well, and was a very early and precocious climber. The stems and leaves are somewhat delicate compared to something like Kentucky Wonder, but they hold up well, and climb almost as high as you let them. One nice characteristic is that they put most of their foliage and flowers near the top of the plant, rather than filling up the ground space at the base, which I prefer to use to grow companion plants nearby. Smeraldo produces an abundance of pale yellow blossoms (self pollinating) which yield a heavy crop of very flat, stringless pods. These really are stringless! Even if you let the pods grow very large, they don't get stringy, and they still have very small seeds. This variety puts most of its effort into producing tasty, edible pods rather than seeds which is what you want in a bean if you plan to eat them as fresh green beans. Even though I started them at the same time as Kentucky Wonder, these are far superior (so far). I've been harvesting these beans for about two weeks now, and the KW is only starting to bloom, so it's a very good early variety. Nothing bad at all about this pole bean -- it's uniformly excellent! I'll definitely be buying Smeraldo again for next year's plantings."

"I had more time for gardening this year due to COVID-19. This is my first time planting this pole bean variety called Bean Smeraldo and it has proven itself to be a winner. The beans while flat are wide, long, meaty, tender, and flavorful. The yield from my plants have been tremendous. The average length of the beans are 8 to 10 inches long. I highly recommend this pole bean, and will definitely plant them next season."
