Product Information Chevron Down Chevron Forward

Red Cored Chantenay produces crunchy, sweet carrots that are excellent for dicing. Roots grow to be a reddish-orange with an indistinct core. This variety produces shorter and thicker carrots that grow to about 14 cm (5 1/2") long when mature. A healthy choice, carrots contain more vitamin A than any other vegetable and when raw and provide important dietary fibre.

Instructions Chevron Down Chevron Forward
Sow in early spring in well cultivated soil once danger of frost has passed. Uniform moisture is critical. Seedlings should be thinned to approximately 5 cm (2?) apart for optimal root formation. Sowings of carrot seed can be repeated every 2 weeks until mid-summer.
    Growing Instructions:
    • Carrot seeds have the highest chance of sprouting successfully when the soil temperature is 13-18˚C (55˚ to 65˚F). While the seeds can germinate at temperatures as low as 4˚C (40˚F), the process will be considerably slower. It is important to avoid planting carrots in soil that exceeds 24˚C (75˚F), as this can lead to poor germination.

Important Note: The main reasons carrot seed fails to germinate is due to cool soil, damping off, crusty soil, and inconsistent moisture.

    • Your soil must remain consistently moist while waiting for the carrot seeds to sprout, which can take 1-3 weeks. If the soil becomes dry and a crust forms, it will hinder the emergence of seedlings. Seeds need air and moisture to sprout.
    • Planting in soil that is stony, gravelly, shallow, clay or compacted can result in low seed germination and stunted, deformed (forked) carrots. Carrots grow best in a light, loamy soil high in organic matter. The best way to ensure successful seed germination is to plant in well-cultivated, loose soil that is evenly moist.
    • Before planting, it is recommended to incorporate a few inches of compost or well-rotted manure. This should be mixed into the top 20 -25 cm (8-10"). While carrots can tolerate some shade, they thrive and develop their sweet, crunchy flavor when grown in full sunlight.
    • Overwatering or heavy rainfall can cause roots to become forked, particularly if this happens within the first few weeks after sowing. Fluctuations in moisture levels can also lead to cracking.
    • For best flavor, harvest carrots when roots are not more than 5 cm (2") in diameter.
  • Planting Depth: 6 mm (1/4")
  • Seed Spacing: 1.3 cm (1/2")
  • Plant Spacing: 5 cm (2")
  • Row Spacing: 30 cm (12")
Suggestions Chevron Down Chevron Forward
Growing Suggestions:
  • Carrots should be kept weeded (a clean mulch can reduce this job). Cover exposed roots (shoulders) with soil to prevent cracking and turning green.
  • Repeat sowings every 2 weeks until mid-summer for a continuous supply of young carrots.
  • Avoid planting dill, cilantro (coriander) and other members of the carrot family near carrots as they tend to cross-pollinate.
