Instructions Chevron Down Chevron Forward
    Growing Instructions:

Dill does not transplant well and seeds should be sown directly into the garden when the soil is warm and all danger of frost is passed. Soil temperature (not air temperature) should be warmer than 15°C (60°F) for seeds to germinate. Planting at a lower temperature will delay germination. Choose a location that receives 6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily. Space seeds and plant to the depth indicated below. Press seeds into the soil to ensure good contact and cover with 6 mm (1/4") of soil. After planting, water the seeds with a gentle mist or shower. A hard spray can wash soil away, dislodge seeds and clump them together. It is critical to keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy during germination. Do not let the soil dry out, as young plants have underdeveloped roots and can quickly dehydrate, particularly in windy conditions.

Suggestions Chevron Down Chevron Forward
  • To enjoy a tasty dill dip combine 1 cup mayonnaise, 2 cups sour cream, 1 Tbsp dill, 1 Tbsp dried minced onion, 1 Tbsp parsley flakes, 1/2 tsp garlic powder with a dash of black pepper to taste. Chill for 30 minutes and enjoy!
Growing Suggestions:
  • When planting dill, choose a location that is sheltered from strong winds as the plant's tall foliage can easily get knocked over.
  • If you’re planting dill for pickling, succession plant seeds every few weeks until midsummer to ensure a constant supply into fall.
  • If you are interested in harvesting dill leaves only and not the flowers or seeds, it is recommended to cut back any flower stalks that begin to form. This will allow the plants to focus their energy on producing fresh new leaves. By delaying the flowering process, you can prolong the leaf cropping season.
  • To harvest the seeds, wait until the flower turns brown and the seeds turn from green to tan. Cut off the head and hang it upside down in a dry and warm place to complete the maturing process. Once the seeds are ready, put the whole flower head in a paper bag. Shake the head vigorously into the bag, collecting the small oval seeds. These pungent seeds are great for canning and pickling.
