Instructions Chevron Down Chevron Forward
    Growing Instructions:

Endive seeds should be sown directly into the garden when the soil is warm and all danger of frost is passed. Space seeds and plant to the depth indicated below. Press seeds into the soil to ensure good contact and cover with 1.3 cm (1/2") of soil. After planting, water seeds with a gentle mist or shower. It is critical to keep the soil consistently moist during germination. When your seedlings reach a height of a few centimetres (inches) and have developed 2 or 3 pairs of leaves, it is important to thin them out, according to the plant spacing indicated below. Do not allow the soil to become dry, as young plants have underdeveloped roots and can quickly dehydrate, particularly in windy conditions.

Suggestions Chevron Down Chevron Forward
Growing Suggestions:
  • Tolerates light shade and light frosts.
  • Endive can be bothered with bolting, which occurs when a plant prematurely flowers and goes to seed. This can be caused when the plant is exposed to a period of extreme weather such as heat. Avoid sowing seed in very hot weather and water plants regularly and deeply to prevent heat stress.
  • Endive can be harvested either as a 'cut and come again' crop for salad leaves in as little as a month by pinching off the outer leaves, leaving some on the plant for future growth. Or left to mature into a head by cutting the head at ground level.
