Instructions
Peas are a cool season crop and seeds can be sown directly in the garden in early Spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Soil temperature should be between 10-16° C (50-60°F) . To speed up germination, soak seed 30 minutes to 24 hours in room temperature water before planting. to speed up germination. Space seeds and plant to the depth indicated below. Press seeds into the soil to ensure good contact and cover with 2.5 cm (1 in.) of soil. After planting, water seeds with a gentle mist or shower. It is critical to keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy during germination. When your seedlings reach a height of a few centimetres (inches) and have developed 2 or 3 pairs of leaves, it is important to thin them out, according to the plant spacing indicated below. Do not allow the soil to become dry, as young plants have underdeveloped roots and can quickly dehydrate, particularly in windy conditions. Pea seeds can be succession planted every to 2 weeks until mid June for a continuous supply of fresh beans. Harvest peas regularly to encourage further production.
- Planting Depth: 2.5 cm (1in.)
- Seed Spacing: Sow pea seeds roughly 2.5 cm (1 in.) apart in rows, keeping rows approximately 75 cm (30 in.) apart.
- Plant Spacing: 10 cm (4 in.)
- Instructions for Nutrient Care: Apply SUPERThrive once per week. Soak in solution of 1/4 tsp per gal for 15 min. or longer depending on size and type.
Suggestions
Growing Suggestions:
- Garden peas are ready for harvest about 18-21 days after flowering. Pick the pods when the seeds are plump and shell before use. Harvest peas in the morning after the dew has dried. They are crispiest and sweetest then.
- Peas do not like excessive heat and will do poorly when temperatures exceed 26°C (80ºF).
- Keep an eye out for birds as they are prone to snack on sprouted peas. If necessary, cover young peas with a row cover.
- Most pea varieties are self-supporting during growth. Taller pea varieties are more productive and easier to harvest if they are trellised or fenced.
- Peas can be grown as microgreens for the quick-growing shoots.
- Do not overwater as wet soil promotes root rot diseases and slows plant growth. Water needs are most critical after flowering. Drought stress will decrease yield due to pod abortion and reduce seed size, increase pod stringiness, and alter seed quality.
- Peas have shallow root systems and care should be taken when cultivating and weeding near the plants.
- Flowers falling off plants? Plants may have been water or heat-stressed just prior to or after the flowers open. Pea flowers are very sensitive to temperatures above 26°C( 80ºF) and if dry conditions occur, the plants will shed their flowers.
- Stringy peas are the result of heat or water stress. Fibers in the pods get tougher making the pods less desirable.

I have not seeded in
"I have not seeded in the garden yet for 2026, but have planted the Alderman peas for several years now. The main reason I choose Alderman is due to the height of the vines (8 foot trellis) as my Dad is 97, on the farm, still gardening & the Alderman peas are the easiest for him to harvest. The height of the pea vines allows us to stand to pick with very little bending over. He picks the top & I clean up the lower pods! We hope to be planting them for many more years to come :-)"
"Awesone and already 2” above the soil. I love not having to stoop down trying to pick them. My shepherd and I eat them all before they have a chance to get inside the house. Planting more this year. Service was speedy."

Haven't planted the seeds yet
"Haven't planted the seeds yet as it is way to early for the growing season. I have bought seeds from this site before and have been extremely happy with the growth and final yield of the harvest. Looking forward to a successful growing season."
Hidden Charges Not Okay
"What is the deal with “free shipping” only to be hit with a charge for tracking my purchase, and only brought to my attention after paying? I already complained and canceled my orders, telling them that I felt it was shady and wrong. I heard nothing back."
