Companion Planting: Plant near beets, cabbage, carrots, swiss chard, lettuce, marigolds, strawberries, tomatoes. Onions have a protective effect against borers and cutworms. The strong aroma emitted by onions disorients and confuses these pests, making it difficult for them to locate and attack the plants.Additionally, marigolds can be beneficial to onions as well. The scent of marigolds acts as a deterrent, reducing the egg-laying activity of the onion maggot fly. This can help prevent infestations and protect the onions from damage caused by these flies.
Flavor: Deliciately flavored
Preparation Ideas: Also known as scallions, they are used to add color and flavor to a wide array of dishes. Rinse to clean, and trim both ends. Thinly slice the greens and the bulbs and add to potato salads, green salads, omlettes, and soups.
Onion seeds can be sown directly in the garden in early Spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Optimum soil temperature (not air temperature) should be 10-35°C (50-95°F) for seeds to germinate. Planting at a lower temperature will delay germination. Space seeds and plant to the depth indicated below. Press seeds into the soil to ensure good contact and cover with 1.3 cm (1/2") of soil. After planting, water the seeds with a gentle mist or shower. It is critical to keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy during germination. When your seedlings reach a height of a few centimetres (inches) and have developed 2 or 3 pairs of leaves, it is important to thin them out, according to the plant spacing indicated below. Do not allow the soil to become dry, as young plants have underdeveloped roots and can quickly dehydrate, particularly in windy conditions.
For an earlier crop, onion seeds can be started indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost in your area. Follow the seed depth and spacing guidelines indicated below. Once all danger of frost has passed, seedlings should be hardened off before planting in their growing location. Seedlings should be transplanted according to the plant and row spacing directions below. Regularly monitor your plants and ensure that the soil remains moist, but not soggy while they establish themselves in their new environment.

Suggestions
Growing Suggestions:
Bunching onions grow quickly and more seeds can be succession planted every 3-4 weeks until August for a continuous supply of green onions.
As bunching onions have a shallow root system and are susceptible to drying out , they need to be watered frequently, especially in hot weather. Apply a layer of mulch to help retain moisture.
Row covers can be used to protect plants from pests such as cutworms and slugs.
Hilling soil well up around the plants encourages the development of longer white stalks.
Onion thinnings can be used like chives.
Harvesting can begin once plants are 15 cm (6") tall when leaves are mild and tender. Mature plants have a stronger flavour. Harvest by cutting leaves from the stem or pulling the entire plant.
