The scent of marigolds acts as a deterrent, reducing the egg-laying activity of the onion maggot fly. This can help prevent infestations and protect the onions from damage caused by these flies.

Instructions Chevron Down Chevron Forward
    Growing Instructions:

Onion seeds should be sown directly into the garden in early Spring as soon as the soil can be worked.when the soil is warm and all danger of frost is past. Optimum soil temperature (not air temperature) should be 10-35°C (50-95°F) for seeds to germinate. Planting at a lower temperature will delay germination. Prepare the soil for planting. Make shallow rows 13 mm (1/2") deep and 30 cm (12") apart. Tear strips apart and unroll into rows. Water the Seedtape thoroughly, then cover with 1.3 cm (1/2") of soil and water thoroughly again. It is critical to keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy during germination. Do not allow the soil to become dry, as young plants have underdeveloped roots and can quickly dehydrate, particularly in windy conditions. Bunching onions grow quickly and more seeds can be succession planted every 3-4 weeks until August for a continuous supply of green onions.

Suggestions Chevron Down Chevron Forward
Growing Suggestions:
  • Bunching onions grow quickly and more seeds can be succession planted every 3-4 weeks until August for a continuous supply of green onions.
  • As bunching onions have a shallow root system and are susceptible to drying out , they need to be watered frequently, especially in hot weather. Apply a layer of mulch to help retain moisture.
  • Row covers can be used to protect plants from pests such as cutworms and slugs.
  • Hilling soil well up around the plants encourages the development of longer white stalks.
  • Harvesting can begin once plants are 15 cm (6") tall when leaves are mild and tender. Mature plants have a stronger flavour. Harvest by cutting leaves from the stem or pulling the entire plant.
