The strong aroma emitted by onions disorients and confuses these pests, making it difficult for them to locate and attack the plants. Additionally, marigolds can be beneficial to onions as well. The scent of marigolds acts as a deterrent, reducing the egg-laying activity of the onion maggot fly. This can help prevent infestations and protect the onions from damage caused by these flies.
  • Preparation Ideas: Use for fresh eating, salads, roasting or pickling.

Suggestions Chevron Down Chevron Forward
Growing Suggestions:
  • Onions are ready to harvest when most of their tops have fallen over and the skins have dried.
  • Harvest when the weather is dry. Do not pull onions if they are still green as they will not store well if pulled too soon or in wet contions.
  • After harvesting, dry or cure the onions in a warm, dry, well-ventilated location, such as a shed or garage. Spread out the onions in a single layer on a clean, dry surface. Cure the onions for two to three weeks until the onion tops and necks are thoroughly dry and the outer bulb scales begin to rustle.
